Freddie Marshall Obituary

Freddie Wilson Marshall passed away May 30, 2011. Truly a steel magnolia, Freddie fought declining health to the very end with indomitable spirit, uncomplaining fortitude and humor.

Freddie was born in 1929 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in English and began her teaching career in Pensacola, Florida in the early 1950s. As a first year teacher, Freddie was given the daunting task of teaching 75 students in one class on the stage of the school theater/cafeteria. Only a curtain separated her "classroom" from the other students during lunch!

While in Pensacola, Freddie met her future husband, Navy jet pilot Fred Marshall, where they began a uniquely supportive and loving 54 years together. They even shared the same birthday!

Freddie taught for almost 30 years in Cocoa, first teaching second grade at St. Marks, then English at Clearlake Junior High and finally, both English and Speech at Cocoa High School. A dedicated teacher, Freddie inspired generations of students through her generosity of spirit and unflagging concern for their welfare and future success. Even after 20 years of retirement, it was rare for Freddie to go out without happily running into at least one former student.

Freddie was an active founding member of Gloria Dei Episcopal Church where she served on various committees including the women's vestry. She was a former member of the Cocoa Junior Woman's Club and a creative seamstress, painter, needlepoint and counted cross-stitch aficionado. Her most passionate focus, however, was on her family, who nicknamed her Supermom!

Freddie is survived by her four devoted children: daughters, Leslie Levin (Marshall), Anne Johnson (Danny), Nancy Wood (James) and son, Craig Marshall (Joyce). She will always be remembered as a loving "Mimi" by her eight grandchildren, Chris, Blair, Erin, Max, Danielle, Shannon, Kathleen and Jamie Lee; and great-granddaughter, Allie Grace. Freddie was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Fred, by three years.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 3rd at 2:00 P.M at the Brevard Memorial Funeral Home in Cocoa.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of St. Francis, Inc., 1250-B Grumman Place, Titusville, FL 32780.

Joey and I both had the pleasure of being in Mrs. Marshall's class at Cocoa High- Class of 82. Mrs.Marshall was a truly an inspiration. Her love of poetry, literature and life has left Joey and I such a great appreciation for the education she so lovingly bestowed on each and every student she taught. Her testimony as a child of God was truly her best legacy, and although many students might not have even realized it at the time, she ministered spirtually to each and every student she encountered. It is nice to look back and remember her as having truly possessed the fruits of the Spirit!! Our condolences to the family. Joey and Ann (Morrison) Powers

Nancy, Anne, Craig, Leslie,
Words can not describe or do justice to the impact your mom had on so many people! My fondest memories of high school are of Speech class in our senior year. Being in the same class as Nancy, Anne and the rest of the crew made it even better. I couldn't wait to get to class!! Mrs. Marshall always treated everyone fairly with dignity and grace. I know that God has blessed your mom, it showed everyday of her life! I pray that God helps her on her journey home and may God bless and carry her family left behind during this time of grief.

When a person reflects upon one's life experiences and who has been inspirational, Ms. Marshall is one of those memories that always comes to the forefront of impressions. She made such an impact upon so many young minds with her teaching. She was devoted to her craft and to her students. I was privileged to be a student at Clearlake and Cocoa High. Ms. Marshall actually taught me to enjoy English and Speech. But, in addition, Ms. Marshall was so devoted to her family and faith; that, too, was inspirational.
When I think of Ms. Marshall (and did just yesterday), I remember her for her sense of style. I will never forget those shoes with the clear heels. And, her perfectly coiffed hair. She was a "Lady" and we are all blessed to have had her in our lives as one of our most memorable role models.
My condolences to you, Nancy, Anne, Leslie and Craig; and to all whose lives were touched by her. Though I haven't seen her in years, I will miss her, too. She touched me immeasurably.

To me, Mrs. Marshall was both a dedicated teacher and a wonderful neighbor. My favorite memory of her was trick-or-treating at her home during Halloween. When I was in elementary school, hers was THE house in the neighborhood to visit, because she dressed as a witch and sat on her roof, lowering candy down in a basket for the children. It was an amazing sight to see, and I could hardly wait to turn the corner and see that house! I will miss Mrs. Marshall, as my teacher, neighbor and friend. She had a wonderful, positive impact on my life, and left me with a love of literature and an everlasting fondness for Halloween. My condolences and love to the Marshall family.

She was one of the three teacher sponsors of the class of 1984 at Cocoa High School, and she also taught the Speech class that I took during my Senior year at CHS. She was one of my favorite teachers and I always enjoyed going to her classes. She helped me, as well as many others, to build our confidence in speaking before groups of people. She always seemed to have a great sense of humor and always lended her encouragement when we all needed it. I feel blessed to have had her as one of my teachers and class sponsors. Please accept my sincerest condolences at this time of loss for your family.

Please accept my sincerest condolences to your family. I loved Mrs. Marshall. I first came to know her in second grade Sunday school at St Marks. I thought she was so lovely. I still have a little book of the Ten Commandments she gave me at Christmas time and share it with my grandchildren. Later, I was one of her students in English and Speech. She is a woman who has made such an impact on my life. She showed myself as well as other young women what it meant to be a lady; and how to be strong, confident and gracious. I wish I could be there to attend her Memorial but, I cannot. However, I will be lifting your family up in prayer for strength and peace at this difficult time. She will never be forgotten. How the angels must be singing at her arrival in heaven.

A wonderful lady, great teacher, an a hoot to be around back in the day. I know you all will miss her terribly but she will live on within each of you. They say 'we do not remember days... we remember moments'. I have the luxury of remembering a moment when Freddie once referred to me as 'nearly perfect Jim'. I'm quite certain she was never fooled... only kind.

Mrs. Marshall was my English Teacher at Clearlake 32 years ago. My memory of her was sitting in her class and I noticed a sore on my arm next to my watch. She told me it was chickenpox and sent me to the clinic.
I have seen her out and about many times in our community.
Thoughts and prayers to the family.
