Brumsic Brandon Obituary

Brumsic Brandon, Jr.

Cocoa Beach, FL

Brumsic Brandon, Jr., 87, of Cocoa Beach, FL passed away Friday, November 28, 2014.  A native of Washington, DC, he was a resident of Long Island, NY since 1959 and lived in the Poconos for several years before moving to Florida over 25 years ago. After serving in the U.S. Army as a sergeant he worked for RCA and Bray Studios as an animator.

He went on to become a pioneer Black cartoonist with his nationally syndicated comic strip "Luther". He was also a local TV personality in NY City as Mr. BB on the children's program "Time for Joya."  Later, he contributed weekly political cartoons and editorial columns to Florida Today. Brandon loved to travel with his wife, Rita, and they enjoyed jazz cruises worldwide.

My Uncle Brumsic's ancestry is deeply intertwined with mine from generations past. He planted a seed within me in 1952 that lay dormant for 44 years yet it changed my life forever. He helped me to accept who I am. I will always appreciate him and he will never be forgotten.
My condolences go out to my aunt Rita and to my cousins.

My Neighbor on Rushmore Street, My Mentor, My Friend... Mr. B. as I affectionately called him, was ALWAYS welcoming. As a child, and later as an adult, I valued and respected his good nature, and the way he interacted with not only me, but the rest of us "kids" on the block. Never negativity, Always a Smile. I will miss his wit, his smile, and friendship. I will honor his legacy by being a spirit that embodies the beautiful way he lived his Life!
To the Brandons, You know my Heart. I send Love and Light to each one.
Rest Peacefully Mr. B~

I consider myself fortunate to have gained life lessons from the various "life coaches" who resided on Rushmore Street in Westbury. Mr. Brandon being a prominent member of that community. There was a perpetual twinkle in his eyes when he spoke to you. A living, breathing, example of the power of humor to impart knowledge to a people in a world gone mad. May the family bask in the memories and lessons he bestowed. John H. Rhodes (Westbury N.Y.)

I remember how much delightful it was for Linda to receive his letters---in words and drawings---when we were freshmen, providing both a treat to her and lucky friends. Over the years, I have come to feel I knew Mr. (and Mrs. Brandon) best through the wonderful children they raised together. The Brandon family is an extended and wondrous net that has pulled many outsiders in over the years, and so I truly feel the sadness of losing him, but I also feel tremendous joy for having known him and the rest of the family. To Mrs. Brandon, Linda, Brumsic, Barbara and the rest of the family members, my deepest condolences.

A wonderful neighbor and friend. He enjoyed life and never complained. I so enjoyed our balcony conversations. He will be missed.

I will miss Brumsic, my neighbor and friend. I will remember him for his warm smile, kind words, sense of humor and for his favorite drink "Yellow Devil". Arlene Kraft #923

I want to express my condolences to the Brandon Family.

As a friend of Linda's, I saw him occasionally over the years at various family gatherings but my lasting image of him dates back to college when I wandered into the basement on Long Island as he was wandering out of his studio. He walked and dressed like a DC guy from the 50's - he had the hat! It was all DC. But, there was more - a twinkle in his eye and wry smile.

He was a trail blazer. He will be missed.

Sincerely,

Vince McKnight
