Charles Wayne Thompson, formerly of Knox County Indiana, passed away May 3rd, at his home in Melbourne, Florida. He was born on May 10, 1938 to Charles "June" and Wilma Thompson of Decker Chapel, Indiana.
After graduating from Vincennes Lincoln High School, he attended Purdue University where he earned a degree in Economics. Upon graduation, he returned to the family farm in Decker Township and commenced his rapid rise in the world of agribusiness, starting with the creation in 1966 of Triple T. Inc., a full service fertilizer manufacturing, wholesale and retail distribution enterprise. In 1975, he founded Thompson Chemicals Inc., which operated more than 20 retail fertilizer plants, three river ports and a manufacturing facility, serving farmers in Illinois and Indiana.
In 1974, Wayne created Triple T. Inns Inc., which over a period of 18 years, owned or operated more than 140 hotels and residential properties in 28 states. These interests at one time represented one of the 10 largest Holiday Inn brand franchisees in the nation.
He is preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, S. Ronald Thompson. He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Susan Thompson of Melbourne Florida; his daughter, Shanna R. Thompson Doll; son-in-law, Morrie Doll; his granddaughter, Ciara B. Thompson Doll of Newburgh, Indiana; and his two step-grandchildren, Aaron Doll of Dayton, Ohio and Amy Tomberlin and her husband, William Tomberlin, of Savannah, Georgia.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, on May 18th at his residence in Melbourne, Florida. Friends and family are invited.
