E. Lawrence Harasym Jr., M.D. Obituary

E. Lawrence "Larry" Harasym of Melbourne Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 16, 2013. He was 72. Larry was born April 18, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA, to Dr. Emil L. and Mrs. Teckla Demanczyk Harasym.

He was graduated cum laude from LaSalle College and Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. After his surgical residency at Temple University Hospital, Larry was commissioned as a Major in the United States Army and was assigned to the Third Field Hospital in Saigon, where he was head of the M.A.S.H. unit. Afterward, he returned to Pennsylvania and was stationed at Valley Forge General Hospital, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam.

Larry was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His entire professional career was as a general surgeon in Bloomsburg, PA. He was Chief of Surgery during most of his years at The Bloomsburg Hospital, as well as maintaining a private surgical practice. Dr. Larry loved being a surgeon and spending time with his patients. He was the Medical Director of the Explorer Scouts at The Bloomsburg Hospital and encouraged high school students to pursue medical careers.

Larry loved the ocean and after retiring, divided his time between homes in Avalon, NJ and St. Croix, USVI. He enjoyed walking the beach, snorkeling, tennis and "fun golf". He was a member of the St. Croix Yacht Club and spent many years sailing the Caribbean with his wife and Cruzan Rum on his sloop "Beats Working".

Larry was an avid reader, enjoying books on religion, science, psychological thrillers and mysteries. He had interests in photography, working with stained glass and calligraphy. He also enjoyed traveling the world, especially on cruises and also going to live theater, dinner with friends, and a fine red wine. After five years in Fort Lauderdale, Larry and his wife moved to Melbourne Beach in 2011, where they were members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Alexandra "Sandra" Yaremko Harasym. He is also survived by his daughter, Christina "Tina" Harasym Korzeniowski and her husband, Luka Korzeniowski of Apex, NC; two sons, E. Lawrence "Lance" Harasym III and his wife, Nicole Fung Harasym of Sanford, FL and Mark Harasym and his wife, Kari Haworth Harasym of Atascadero, CA. Larry's most precious treasures were his three grandchildren: Zoriana and Nadia Korzeniowski and Emil L. Harasym IV. He is also survived by his sister, Antoinette (Joseph) Hanusey of Indialantic, FL; and brother, Dr. Eugene (Colleen) Harasym of Factoryville, PA.

Larry was a kind, generous, intelligent and loving man, with a great personality. He loved to laugh and spend time with his family. Larry made his wife laugh. He was a wonderful husband and father and will be deeply missed by his family and many, many friends.

Mass will be on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 10am at Immaculate Conception Church, 3780 S. Highway A1A, Melbourne Beach, FL.
