George Dillon Johnson, Jr., passed away at the age of 84, on September 28, 2012, in Titusville, FL.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rose Marie - a former Mrs. Florida ('66). His children are Rose Anne Johnson, Rick (Dawn) Johnson, Terry (John) Barker, and Julie Johnson. He was the proud Grampa of eight and great-grandfather of three. His brother is Tom (Insoon) Johnson. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Margaret (Elliott) Johnson.
George graduated from Miami Beach High School where he was active in the Marching Band (trombone). He earned his B.S. in Business Administration from the Univ. of Florida in 1950. While there he was a member of the Marching Band, Pi Kappa Phi, and ROTC.
Later, he was employed by the State of Florida's Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering holding the offices of Accountant, Comptroller, Supervisor of Racing, and Division Director. In 1972, he joined the American Greyhound Track Operators and Owners Association as their Executive Director. Positions held there were: World Greyhound Racing Federation Secretary, American Greyhound Council Secretary, and Asst. to the President of Greyhound Publications. George enjoyed working and traveling with the organization for the next 22 years. Before retiring in 1994, he and Rose Marie traveled to 26 countries and 49 states. The Association honored George with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
George began his 38 years of service in the Army Reserves after graduating U of F; achieving the rank of Colonel. He earned numerous awards including the Meritorious Service Medal and served as Executive Officer of the 324th General Hospital in Miami. Other training included Transportation and Medical Service Corps, Command & General Staff College, and the Industrial War College. After retirement he served MOAA's Space Coast Chapter as President and Florida Council's East Central Area as Vice President.
Burial will be with military honors at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA on October 12, 2012 at 2:30 pm.
