George J. Davis, 91, died March 31, 2012. He was born November 11, 1920, in Washington, D.C.

He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1943, and served in the Pacific during World War II. Among the ships he commanded until his retirement in 1972 were the USS McCaffery DD-860 (1957-1958) and the USS Blandy DD-943 (1959-1961). After retirement from the Navy, he was President of Madeline Island Enterprises in La Pointe, Wisconsin. An accomplished sailor, he moved to South Merritt Island, Florida in 1975 and spent the next decades sailing in the Melbourne and Canaveral area.

He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Paine Davis, a WWII WASP, who died in 2003 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Survivors include his two brothers, Shethar ("Duke") Davis of Wabash, IN and Thomas W. Davis of Atlanta, GA; a sister-in-law, Emily Carl Davis of Sarasota, FL; his daughter, Christine Davis Townsend of North Potomac, MD; his two sons, George Junius Davis, Jr. of Manassas, VA and Robert Louis Davis of South Merritt Island, FL; four grandchildren, Christopher Townsend IV, Jessica Townsend, Lauren Davis and Grant Davis; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at Florida Memorial Funeral Home, 5950 South U.S. Highway 1, Rockledge, FL 32955 (321) 636-8943. Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
