Glenn Robert Swope Obituary

Glenn Robert Swope, age 88, died on November 29, 2012, at Holmes Regional Medical Center, following a short illness. He died peacefully surrounded by his family. Glenn was born on September 5, 1924 in Bristol, Tennessee to Robert and Ethel Swope. He spent his early years in Sanford, FL. Following his mother's death, Glenn spent the remainder of his childhood and high school years at Thornwell Orphanage in South Carolina.

Glenn served in WWII with Patton's Third Army in Germany. His decorations include the combat infantry badge and two bronze stars.

Following the war, Glenn returned to Clinton, SC and used the GI Bill to earn his degree in economics at Presbyterian College. Glenn was living in Ocala, FL when he met Madelyn Raupp. They married on November 11, 1950. The family celebrated Glenn and Madelyn's 62nd anniversary this year.

Glenn and Madelyn came to Brevard County in 1957 and settled in Eau Gallie. He began a long career working at the Kennedy Space Center. During his 33 years with Pan American, he witnessed the manned space program first hand and told stories of the astronauts and the many rocket launches.

Following retirement, Glenn and Madelyn enjoyed fishing in the Indian River Lagoon and were avid sports fans. For many years, they attended the home football games of his beloved Gators. They also took up golf and he continued to play until his death. He was excited to get his first hole in one this spring.

Throughout his life, Glenn enjoyed helping his family, friends, and neighbors with anything they needed. He was a longtime member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and in his later years, attended St. Paul Methodist Church where he was often a greeter.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Blanche. He is survived by his wife, Madelyn, and daughters, Debra Fritts (Richard) and Donna (Dave). He had six grandchildren, Corey, Lindsey, Caitlin and Kjersti Johnson and Wayne and Cara. Glenn was looking forward to the birth of his first great grandchild expected in June 2013.

Services will be held at St. Paul's Methodist Church on Highland Ave. in Eau Gallie on December 7th, at 2 pm. Internment will follow at Florida Memorial Gardens.
