Joan Carol Backes Spychalsky Obituary

Joan passed away on March 12th, at the age of 71, after a battle with breast cancer that spanned almost 25 years. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she lived on Long Island until moving to warm and sunny Florida with her husband and children, in 1967.

She worked for the Melbourne/So. Brevard Chamber of Commerce from 1973 to 1990 as Admin Asst., moving up to VP. She was later instrumental in the fund raising and refurbishment of the Henegar Center for the Arts, as an Executive Director from 1990 to 1992.

After "retirement" she found time for her passion of oil painting. Her home is adorned with her artistic works. She always made time to be actively involved in her church as a cantor and choir member, but also other activities that could benefit from her many talents. Most recently she became more involved with the Council of Catholic Women (CCW) at Our Lady of Lourdes.

Joan is survived by her husband, with whom she recently celebrated 50 years of marriage, Joe; daughter, Kathleen Telkamp, and husband Tim; son, Joe and wife, Christina; daughter-in-law, Andrea Spychalsky; sister, Doris Stewart; grandchildren, Jon, Lauren, Melanie, and Julia Spychalsky, Dylan and Christian Telkamp; along with a few cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Bob.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Organ Fund at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (1626 Oak Street, Melbourne, FL 32901), to honor her lifelong love of music.

There will be no viewing. The funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes (1710 Hickory St, Melbourne), on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 12 noon. A reception immediately following will be sponsored by the CCW in the Hall.
