Lester Manfred Armstrong (Chick), 91, of Melbourne, entered into rest on Wednesday, April 25, 2012. He was born on November 9, 1920 in Plainview, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his wife, Verla Armstrong; numerous brothers and sisters; and grandson, Jamie Carr.
Lester was a survivor of the Great Depression. He left Nebraska in October 1940 to join the U.S. Army where he served in the South Pacific during World War II and Southeast Asia during the Korean War. He was injured at the Battle of Peleliu in 1944. He was discharged in 1945 and continued his military career in the U.S. Air Force, from which he retired in 1967. After retiring from the military, he worked for Bendix Corporation at Kennedy Space Center for several years.
Lester is survived by his daughters, June Fairall and Beverly Rinehart; sons-in-law, Ed Fairall and David Rinehart; grandchildren, Heather and Matt Rehrer, Kurt Rinehart, and Deanna Carr; as well as three great-grandchildren, Jake, Jesse and Emily Rehrer.
He was a man of great faith and a wonderful, dedicated father and grandfather who was deeply loved by all. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. We are grateful knowing that he is finally at peace and reunited with his bride and savior.
Calling hours will be from 4-6pm, Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rocklege. A memorial service will be held at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rocklege on April 30, 2012, at 10:00am.
