Roald "Ollie" Runesten Olsen, 90, of Melbourne, passed away Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Southland Suites of Melbourne. Roald was born February 5, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Valdemar and Hedwig Rosenlund Olsen.
As a child he was an award winning violinist. He graduated from Glen Nor High School in Pennsylvania in 1941.
He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations with the 2nd and 3rd Armored Divisions in WWII with General Patton. He was discharged after 3 years and 4 months as a Tech Sergeant.
He had worked from 1941 to 1980 for Standard Oil Company, Esso Standard Oil Company, Humble Oil and Refinery Company and the Exxon Corporation in the eastern region located in Philadelphia, PA and Baltimore, MD as a marketing specialist. He retired as a Senior Operation Systems Specialist.
He moved to Melbourne in 1985. He was a past member of the Sons of Norway Lodge in Philadelphia and a member of Advent Lutheran Church in Viera, Melbourne Elks Lodge #1744, the Wickham Park Advisory Committee and Vice President of the Exxon Mobil Retirees Club of Central Florida.
Roald's wife of 63 years, Gertrude "Trudy" Olsen, passed away in 2009.
His family includes his son and daughter-in-law, Jay R. and Marge Olsen; two grandsons, Todd Olsen and Ryan Olsen; and a daughter, Nan Olsen Miller.
A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care, 1001 South Hickory Street, Melbourne.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pipe Organ Fund, Advent Lutheran Church, 7550 North Wickham Road, Melbourne, FL 32940.
