Robert Douglass Adgate, Sr., our beloved "Popeye", passed away the early morning of January 17, 2013. He was born in Ionia, MI on March 28, 1922.

Bob was predeceased by his wife of 62 ½ years, Gloria Brooke Adgate, in 2004. His son, Robert D. Adgate "Bob", Jr. also predeceased him in April, 2012.

Bob moved to the Washington, DC area in 1934. He joined the Navy in 1942 and was a member of the Navy Band. While in the Navy he played the trumpet in a touring stage band, where he provided entertainment, occasionally accompanying well-known stars, including Bing Crosby. His love of big band music never left his heart and he continued to enjoy it often. Upon Honorable Discharge in 1945, he went to work for the United States Postal Service and became a supervisor in the Congressional Post Office. He was a Scout Master for his son's Boy Scout Troop #52, which was based at All Saints Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase, MD. Troop #52 is Washington D.C.'s oldest troop and under his leadership he produced many Eagle Scouts, including his son, Bobby. At that time, it was the largest troop in the country. He touched the lives of many young scouts over the years and will be remembered fondly by them all.

Bob and Gloria moved from Bethesda, MD to Haymarket, VA in 1983. In 2006 he moved to Titusville, FL to enjoy retirement with his son and daughter-in-law. His love of boating was shared with his son, and in 2011 they moved to their final destination in Florida at Merritt Island. It was a peaceful area on the water and he considered it his personal canal. It was here he enjoyed all the nature that comes with living on the water. Popeye was quick to grab the binoculars and tell us the type of bird we saw or yell for us to come and see the dolphin or manatee in the canal. His pal "Herman", a blue heron, came to visit quite often and came as close as the screened-in porch over time.

He is survived by daughter, Gloria Benns (Bill); daughter-in-law and devoted caregiver with whom he lived, Sharon Adgate; his grand- children, Mike Adgate (Tammy) and Steve Adgate (Carla) both of Marshall, VA, Chrys Pope, of New Orleans, Bill Benns IV (Elizabeth) of Cuttyhunk, MA, Jim Benns (LaVerne) of Virginia Beach, Thomas Benns (Amy) of Elkton, VA; great-grandchildren, Josie, Rebecca, Jennifer, Carleigh, Sarah, Andrea, Jacob and Max; great-great-granddaughter, Zoey; and grand-dog J.D.

In addition to his family, he leaves behind many close old and new friends whose company he thoroughly enjoyed.

A graveside service will be held in Washington, DC, at a later date in the spring.

Just like his son Bobby, he loved watching his great-granddaughters play softball, soccer and volleyball. Donations made to: The Fauquier Falcon Booster Club, P. O. Box 1166, Warrenton, VA 20188-1166, would honor Bob/Popeye, as well as help his great-granddaughters.
