Sylvia Mary (Higgins) Siljestrom's life ended here on earth on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at the age of 80, after a brief battle with cancer. Sylvia was a long time Cocoa Beach resident; she passed away at home, which was her wish, surrounded by her loving extended family.
She was the wife of the late Lt. Commander Gordon Siljestrom. Sylvia leaves behind her six children, Mark Siljestrom, Dave Siljestrom, Cindy Maytrott, Dewey Siljestrom, Pam Van Horn and Kathy Compton; fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her brothers and sisters, Ken Higgins, Pam Murphy, Delbert Keen and Beverly Hupfer, from Massachusetts, and Miriam Smyrnos, who resides in Florida.
Sylvia was born in Birmingham, England, and came to the States at the age of fourteen. She grew up in Malden, Massachusetts, and eventually married a Naval Officer. They traveled coast to coast with their expanding family.
Sylvia enjoyed playing Bridge and Scrabble. She was a member of the Officers Wives Club and Toastmasters. She was a huge fan of the arts, especially enjoying the Cocoa Beach art Show and attending events at the King Center. She was also a player at the Surfside Playhouse.
Sylvia was an amazing and extraordinary woman whose wit, intelligence and spontaneity touched all who knew her. Although she leaves this world in body, her spirit will live in all of us forever.
To Celebrate Sylvia's life, we will be having a Paddle Out on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at 9:00 am, at the Sea Aire Motel, 181 N. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach.
