Theone Jean DiRocco, 90, known to her friends as Toni, died peacefully July 22, 2013 at the home of her son Derek DiRocco in Hilton Head, SC, where she recently made her home after nearly 40 years in Cocoa Beach.
With multiple books published, Theone was well known for her poetry, which also appeared in many periodicals. She was an accomplished artist and illustrator, with her artwork displayed throughout Brevard County. She was affiliated with many local clubs and organizations, including the Brevard Scribblers, the National League of American Pen Woman, the C-Pipers musical group and the local chapter of the SPARS among her favorites.
Theone was born in Thornburg, Iowa in 1923 and lived most of her early years in the Midwest. Theone played catcher for semi-professional softball and played the World Series in Detroit Tigers Stadium before joining the United States Coast Guard and moving to New York City, where she served as a storekeeper during World War II. Shortly after the war, Theone met and married Anthony "Bob" DiRocco, who predeceased her in 2009, after 64 years of marriage.
Theone is survived by her two sons, Anthony and his wife Lucy of Juno Beach, FL, and Derek and wife Kathleen, of Hilton Head, SC; her brother, Bill Bassett of Lake Ozark, MO; and four grandchildren, Alison and her husband John, Anthony, Michael and his wife Cheryl and Adrienne.
A service will be held Monday July 29th at 11:00AM, at Beckman Williamson Funeral Home, Cocoa Beach, FL. Interment with veteran honors, will be next to her husband at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Cocoa Beach Public Library, 550 North Brevard Ave., Cocoa Beach, FL 32931.
