Timothy John Neary, son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth Neary, was born in Rochester, NY on February 8, 1947. He passed away suddenly at his home in Fort Lauderdale, FL, on April 25, 2012.
Tim lived a life of service to his community and his country. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1966 serving as a CTO (cryptologic technician - communication operations). In 1971, he transferred from active duty to the Navy Reserves. He retired from the NRSECGRU Orlando 308 as a Chief Petty Officer, in 1992. Included in his many awards and citations is the Navy Meritorious Service Medal.
He worked for Harris Corporation in Rochester supporting the RF Communications Group and was a volunteer firefighter with the Pittsford Volunteer Fire Department until he moved to Florida. He continued working for Harris GESD in Melbourne.
His community activities included supporting the annual Up With Downs Charity Softball Tournament, VFW Post 4536, and volunteering with the Malabar Volunteer Fire Department, where he was a Lieutenant and Safety Officer.
In 1996, he took a position with Sunair Electronics in Fort Lauderdale, where he was also active in the Broward County Navy League, Broward Navy Days, VFW Post 1966, and the Chief Petty Officers Association of Miami. Tim was especially proud of his efforts planning and supporting the annual CPO Fleet Week Reception.
His last 12 years of civilian employment were with the United States Coast Guard ESU Miami. Among his many accomplishments there were two Meritorious Unit Commendations for his efforts during their response to the 2005 Hurricanes.
Tim is survived by his wife, S. Gayle Malone-Neary; brothers, Patrick and Terrence Neary; his children, Edward Neary (wife, Susan) and Katherine Detsch (husband, Chris); and his cherished grandchildren, Melissa Rose Neary, Thomas Neary, David Neary, and Allyn Margaret Detsch.
Tim requested cremation (Kraeer-Fairchild) with burial at sea and a party. A celebration of his life will be held June 10, 2012 at Bravo Italiano Ristorante, 1515 SE 17th Street Causeway, Fort Lauderdale, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. Friends and family are encouraged to attend this event to lift a glass and share their memories of Tim. Be advised: there will be bagpipes!
