William Walker Obituary

William Phelps "Bill" Walker, 90, passed away May 25, 2011 at home. He was born in 1920 in Sioux City, Iowa to the late Harold P. and Helen (Schroer) Walker. He was raised in St. Louis, MO where he met and married Janet Lane.

Bill was a medical corpsman in the United States Navy during World War ll. He was stationed in the South Pacific and received a purple heart for his service.

He lived in Storm Lake, IA and Campbellsville, KY where he owned a woman's clothing store. Following retirement he and Janet lived in Asheville, NC where he helped in his son's dulcimer business. He and Janet moved to Titusville in 1999.

Wherever he lived he could be heard singing in church and small groups. His beautiful tenor voice and his love of theater kept him performing in numerous community productions. He was an excellent wood worker and gardener. While in Kentucky he served over 20 years as the blood program chairperson and military liaison for the American Red Cross. He was awarded the status of Kentucky Colonel, the highest title of honor bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky given by the governor to individuals in recognition of outstanding service.

He was a member of Kiwanis International for over 60 years. He was a member of Indian River City Methodist Church and volunteered with the Parrish Medical Center Auxiliary. His greatest joy was his family and being able to do things for other people.

Bill is survived by his wife of 70 years, Janet; brother and sister-in-law, RIchard and Lila Walker, San Diego; daughters, Beth Daniels and Barbara Walker of Titusville; grandchildren, Lynn Ann Dotson, Titusville, Jason Minor, Titusville, Jeff Minor, Lexington, KY, Kevin Walker, San Francisco, Trey Walker, Cincinnati and Paige Walker-Carlton, Sydney, Australia; daughter-in-law, Kate Walker; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, William Walker, Jr., in 1992.

The family greatly appreciated the support and comfort provided by Hospice of St. Francis. Donations may be made to Hospice of St. Francis, 1250-B Grumman Place, Titusville, 32780.
