Barbara Ann Demko
Melbourne Beach, FL
October 17, 1938- January 23, 2014 Barbara Demko passed away on Thursday at her beachside home in Melbourne Beach, Florida, of natural causes. She was a dedicated educator throughout her life.
Barbara was born and raised in Bethlehem, PA where she earned a Bachelor's degree in education from Arcadia College. After graduation, she married John Demko in 1960 and they moved to San Jose to begin their lives in California's Bay Area. Soon after arriving she began teaching at Hazelwood School in Campbell Union School District, where she spent her entire career teaching elementary grades. She had a passion for teaching and reluctantly retired in 2000, when she moved to Florida and focused on volunteer work, including tutoring children in reading, serving hot meals to the homeless, and working at the local museum and King Center for Performing Arts.
During her 40 years living in California, Barbara spent countless weekends, holidays, and summers at the family's vacation home in Mi Wuk Village. Although not an outdoors-person, she loved to sit by the fire and work on puzzles while her husband and children skied. Mostly, she enjoyed the family cabin because she knew how much it meant to her children, and it provided her family an opportunity to spend weekends and holidays with close family friends.
In retirement, Barbara spent a great deal of time traveling the world with her husband and granddaughters. Perhaps her greatest contribution to her family was the gift of travel, which provided innumerable experiences and instilled values that will help guide them throughout their lives.
Barbara was an incredibly generous person, the matriarch of her family, and will be missed by many.
Barbara is survived by her dedicated husband of 54 years, John; son Greg and daughter-in-law Dianne of Alamosa, Colorado, son Doug of Chico, twin granddaughters Jacqueline and Michelle, and grandson Ben.
No services are planned. Friends are invited to leave remembrances on her Facebook page (facebook.com/barbara.demko.92), or contact the family directly.
