William "Bill" Walter Safranek, 60, of Cocoa, died on February 17, 2014.

He was born on June 16, 1953 in New York, NY to William and Roma Safranek. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Susan; son Jason of Cocoa; daughter Audrey Cox, son-in-law Ryan and grandson Garrett all of Cocoa; sister Roma Anjoy and brother-in-law Duane Johnson of Seattle, Washington; Robert Safranek and fiance' Nancy Moyer of Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Bill graduated from Xavier High School, New York City in 1971. He served in the United States Army from 1978-1987 and attained the rank of Captain. He earned his Bachelor of Science from St. Peters College in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1976, Master of Science in Microbiology from the University of Rhode Island, Kingston in 1978, and his Ph.D. from Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1993. He was the Clinical Microbiologist at Wuesthoff Hospital's Reference Laboratory for 17 years while teaching part-time as an adjunct professor for Brevard Community College. In 2007, he began his full-time teaching career at the University of Central Florida as an Assistant Professor for the College of Medicine. He taught in the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences where he received multiple teaching awards. He was an outstanding educator who was passionate about sharing his love of science with students. His work ethic, kindness and commitment were infectious and a model for all. In 2010, he was the recipient of the UCF Teaching Incentive Award and in 2013 he was the College of Medicine's Founders' Day honoree for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Bill had many hobbies and interests. He was an amateur mycologist, served as Treasurer for many years in the Florida branch of the American Society for Microbiology, enjoyed collecting lichens at Tosohatchee State Reserve and mentored students from local area schools with their science fair projects. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, woodworking, was an avid reader, competed in archery tournaments and enjoyed riding his motorcycle to UCF. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his grandson, Garrett.

Final arrangements are being made through Funeral Solutions, 5455 North US-1, Cocoa. The University of Central Florida will hold a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 23rd at UCF's FAIRWINDS Alumni Center, 12676 Gemini Blvd. North, Orlando, FL 32816. A scholarship for undergraduates will be established in honor of Dr. Safranek. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UCF Foundation at www.ucffoundation.org.
