Norma Jean Baird
Merritt Island, FL
The Lord received Norma Jean Baird, his "good and faithful servant, into the joy of the lord" on April 22, 2014 after a very short reoccurrence of cancer. Norma was born in Cocoa on April 30, 1930 and graduated from Cocoa High School in 1948. She attended Massey Business School in Jacksonville before marrying her childhood sweetheart Gene Baird on May 19, 1951 while he was serving in the US Navy and stationed in San Diego. They returned to Merritt Island where they raised a family and became an integral part of the Central Brevard community and they watched the space program grow while preserving the history of Brevard County through writing articles and sharing their stories with family and friends. They were the editors of the Mosquito Beaters Memory Book for 15 years. In November 1996, Gene and Norma Baird were recognized as Founding Members of the Florida Historical Library Foundation, an award Norma held dear. Norma worked for Kenaston Clinic in Cocoa for 30 years as the medical billing accountant and retired in 2001 from Courtney Springs Village as the Business Manager. Norma was active in several local writers groups and contributed original material to the Courtney Springs Village newsletter, almost to the very end. Gene and Norma have been members of the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island since 1958 and Gene wants all of their friends to know that she passed peacefully and is with them all, even now.
Norma was preceded in death by her sister Mary Wagner and parents George and Christine Leighty. She is survived by her brother George, Jr.(Dorothy) Leighty, husband Gene and three children and their families; son, Richard (Laurel), grandchildren Katherine and Steven of Orlando; son, David "Ron", grandchild Bruce and great grandchildren Aiden and Anthony of Merritt Island; daughter, Jeanette (Ken) Holder, grandchildren Jonathan (Toni) Black, great grandchild Lilieana, and Jeffery Black, great grandchildren, Jamin and Emma.
Calling hours are 1:00- 2:00pm Sunday, April 27, 2014 followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00pm at Wylie-Baxley Merritt Island Funeral Home.
