Merritt Island, FL

Joseph "Joe" Stokes Elmer, of Merritt Island, went home peacefully to be with his Heavenly Father on May 2, 2014. He was 91.

Joe was born to the late Robert Emmett Patterson Elmer and Mary Stokes Elmer in Winnetka, IL on March 1, 1923. A gifted athlete, Joe excelled in ice hockey, baseball and football. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1946, Class of 1947. From there, he was stationed in Charleston, SC where he met Miss Virginia Moore and they were married in New Orleans on November 11, 1949. An illustrious military career followed as Joe attended Navy flight school, earning his wings of gold in 1951. His career included tours of duty in the Korean War, exchange duty with the U.S. Air Force, a Navy Flight instructor in the F-8 Crusader, graduate of the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School, Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron 103, and Air Boss on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt in Vietnam. He retired from the Navy in 1974 as a Captain and with his wife, Virginia, built their home in Merritt Island, FL. Ever the athlete, he excelled at golf while being active in his church home of Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Satellite Beach. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and knew the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

Joe is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia Moore Elmer; his three children, Deborah Wagner of Kailua, HI, Joseph Elmer; Jr of Winter Springs, FL; and Michael Elmer of Marietta, GA. In addition, he is survived by 12 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He will be missed and never forgotten.

A celebration of Joe's life will be held at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Joe's church home; Holy Apostles Episcopal Church, 505 Grant Ave, Satellite Beach, FL 32937.
