E. H. Sakal

Dr. E H (Harry) Sakal, died Sunday, June 22, 2014 peacefully at his home in Indialantic, FL. He was 100 years, seven months and three days old. Born in Heliopolis, Egypt, the seventh of nine children, to Haim R. and Regina Sakal. Harry was educated in England, graduating from Liverpool University, in 1939. He received his PhD in Chemistry from MIT, Cambridge, MA, shortly thereafter.

Harry immigrated to the US in 1939. A proud naturalized citizen of the United States, he served in the Marine Corps during WWII.

Harry spent 30 years in industry, working as a research chemist for Rohm and Hass Labs. He joined Warner Chilcott and then Warner Lambert Inc. as a Manager in International Business, and finally Carter Wallace Laboratories, where he was Director of International Sales

Harry became interested in Dale Carnegie Courses. After one class, he was so excited in the courses that he began a concurrent career teaching for the organization.

In 1967 Harry joined the faculty of William Patterson University, Wayne NJ, as a Professor of Organic Chemistry and a "new" field, Environmental Science. His charisma and excitement for his subjects created quite a stir among students who often waited in lines to take his classes.

In 1984 Harry and his wife, Jean moved from Brookside, NJ to Indialantic, Florida. Always physically active, a strong swimmer and championship diver, he pursued interests with great eagerness. His age seemed to encourage more activities. In his 90's he parasailed, roller skated, learned to square dance, and wind surfed with a group of men (all over 70) called the 'Senior Wind Surfing Club"; with Harry being the "Senior Senior". The bucket list never seemed to empty, culminating just before his 100th birthday when he piloted a helicopter from Merritt Island Airport and flew over to Port Canaveral and back.

Predeceased by his wife, Jean Van Cleaf Sakal (1995), Harry leaves four children, Jane M. Erickson (Glenn), Laura L. Fausone, Marko V. Sakal, and Suzy McNeil, (Hugh); six grandchildren, Julie Erickson Bond (John), Thomas Erickson (Rime), Frank Fausone (Remy), Leslie Sakal, Eve Rametta, and John R. Rametta, III; three great-grandchildren, which were Harry's pride and joy, Alden Bond, age six, Serefina Fausone, age six months, and Ella Bond, age one month.

The family will gather to celebrate Harry's life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: Vitas Hospice 4450 W. Eau Gallie Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32935 or Veterans' Transitional Facility, 700 Fee Ave, Melbourne, FL 32903.
