Shirley Bliss Martell
Shirley Bliss Martell was born August 18, 1928 in Scranton, PA to Helen Jones and Sydney Bliss, and died on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at the William Childs Hospice House in Palm Bay, FL. Her grandfather, Valentine Bliss, from Macclesfield, England, founded the Bliss Silk Throwing Company which had five mills in Scranton and the surrounding area. She graduated from the Hewitt School in NY City, and attended Vassar College. She married Richard Jarlath Martell on August 28, 1948, a union which lasted over 55 years until his death in 2004. After a long residence in CT the family moved to Indian Harbour Beach, FL in 1976, with Shirley recently moving to Hibiscus Court in Melbourne. She was a longtime volunteer at Holmes Regional Medical Center.
Shirley is survived by her two children, Richard Bliss Martell, of Hillsboro Beach, FL, and Sheila Martell Newman of Harrisonburg, VA, as well as her two grandchildren, Sean and Maggie Newman, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she in turn passed along lifelong loves of music and travel.
A memorial service will be held at her church, St. John's Episcopal Church of Melbourne, on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 10 a.m.
