John Hargis Skaggs

Satellite Beach, FL

John Hargis Skaggs died Saturday, August 9, 2014 in Satellite Beach, FL. John was predeceased by his parents, Hargis Lloyd and Alwilda Hopkins Skaggs; and his beloved maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Yates Hopkins. John was born on July 17, 1953, at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, AK. After several moves with the Air Force, his family settled in Brevard County. He attended DeLaura Junior High School and West Palm Beach Military Academy.

Music of all kinds was celebrated in his family home and this began his love for rock and roll and blues music. John played cello in the elementary school band and later moved on to other instruments. He especially loved the blues and played the "blues harp" with many local bands. He was truly gifted as a musician and it brought much happiness to his life and others. John had difficult times in his early teen years and struggled with drug addiction until his death. He went to the beach almost every day, listening to music and watching the tides. This brought much peace and joy to him.

John is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Skaggs White and Susan Skaggs Hopkins; brother-in-law, John Hopkins; niece, Holly Hopkins Cleveland (Jeff); nephews, Bryan, Christopher (Liz) and Adam White; great nieces, Emily and Elizabeth Cleveland, Brooke and Amelia White; and great nephew, Dalton White. He leaves behind many other family members.

A service will be held August 16, 2014, 2 p.m at Holy Trinity Episcopal Historic Chapel, 50 W. Strawbridge Ave., Melbourne, FL. In lieu of flowers, please make remembrances to the South Brevard Sharing Center, 17 E. Hibiscus Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32901.
