Barbara McNamara Obituary

Barbara O. McNamara passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2011. She died peacefully at Rosewood Village, Charlottesville, VA, where she lived for the last 2 years. The exemplary care of the Rosewood and Legacy Hospice staff, made her last days not only gentle ones, but consistent with the autonomy and dignity she lived her life.

Barbara's connection to her home in Indialantic, FL dated to 1956, when she first arrived as a young bride and teacher. For over 25 years she taught at Indialantic Elementary School, spanning the terms of 3 principals. Her creative spirit in the classroom, and devotion to her students led to lifelong relationships that transcended their 6th grade graduation ceremonies.

The Friday gang at Ichabod's can still detect her laughter pealing over the jukebox. Nell, Jan, Betty, Melinda, Cathy and her other dear coconspirators will raise a pint in song. The "Indialantic Commodores" trio, with Barbara on piano, the late Ned Strayla on mandolin, and Penny Brandt on upright bass, played just right: locals only, small audiences, big tip jars.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Carroll J. McNamara, in 1992.

She is survived by the 3 children they raised together, Susan Follis of Delmar, NY, Ann Mentzinger of Madison, CT, and Stephen McNamara of Charlottesville, VA. "Gramma Bar" to Matthew, Michael, Bobby, Robin, Susan, Sean, Lucas, and Matilda, her soft piano lullabies, hard fought Scrabble games, and lilting story times will be tender memories.

The family will cast her ashes together with her husband's, over the rocky Connecticut shoreline where they first met in 1941, and fell in love.

Full circle, Barbara.

We will miss you.
