Robert Lee Rice, Sr., 87, died peacefully with family members by his side, Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Cape Canaveral Hospital. He was of the protestant faith. He was born April 3, 1925, at Pinesburg, Maryland, Washington County. He came to live in Brevard County in 2005.
He was the son of the late Oscar Lucien and Mary Ann (Null) Rice.
He retired from the US Navy in May of 1963 having served 20 years of active duty. He then served 10 years US Navy Fleet Reserve having served a total of 30 years. He was a US Navy Veteran having served in WW II and other wars and conflicts, including the Korean War and Vietnam from July 1943 - May 1963 worldwide and South Pacific with seven battle stars and a President Unit Citation with two stars.
He was employed at Maryland Correctional Institute for twenty-one and one half years and retired from there in June 1985.
He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Belle Armes (William "Bill") Cocoa, Florida and Donna Marie Boward of Martinsburg, WV; and one son, Robert Lee Rice, Jr. (Paula) of Greencastle, PA; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Gail Darlene Wiebrecht; and 3 sons, James Leroy Rice, Richard Lee Rice and Gary Lee Rice; three sisters, Elise and Thelma, who died in young age, and Mary Edith Trabert.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at Courtenay Springs Village, 1200 S. Courtenay Parkway, Merritt Island, Florida, on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at 1 PM.
He will be greatly missed by all.
