Gary H. Ydo, 49, died at home Sunday, December 2, 2012, in the loving arms of his wife and sons.
He was a native Floridian who loved boating and fishing on the St. Johns River and Indian River Lagoon. He was a mechanical engineer who graduated from the University of Florida and was a passionate Gator fan. He loved to travel to the Caribbean and had visited numerous islands including St. Lucia, St. Thomas and Bonaire, where he enjoyed deep-sea fishing.
But Gary's greatest love was his family, including wife Colleen Killian-Ydo and sons Ryan and Brad Ydo. He was an active booster and fan of Satellite High School football, soccer and basketball. He also supported his son, Ryan, with surfing.
Gary was born in Jacksonville, FL, in 1963 to Maria and Cornelis Ydo, who were Dutch immigrants. He graduated from Englewood High School in Jacksonville, where he played basketball (he was 6 feet 7 inches tall), graduated in the top 10 in his class and was listed in the "Who's Who among American High School Students." He excelled at math, which led to his acceptance to the UF engineering program.
During his engineering career, he served as project manager on construction of large water and wastewater treatment plants. He served as a mechanical project estimator for many years in Orlando and Titusville.
He is survived by his mother, known to friends as Rita, and was predeceased by his father. He also is survived by sister, Renee Liggero and her husband, Robert; niece, Isabella Liggero; nephew, Andre Liggero; brother-in-law, Gary Killian; sister-in-law, Louisa Killian; and nephew, Michael Killian and his wife, April. Close family also include Nini and Jerry Post; Doug and Ellen Post and their son, Daniel; all the Jaspers and Ydos in Holland.
A Celebration of Life service will be Sunday, December 16th at 10 a.m. at the Melbourne Yacht Club, 1202 River Drive, Melbourne, 32901.
