Robert Warren Hollowell passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013. He was 78 years old. "Bob" was born in Clinton, Iowa, on June 17, 1934.
He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Ellie; and survived by his sister, Barbara Edgren; four children, Sue Falcioni (Steve), Bob, Cindi Vetsch (Leon) and Dan (Heidi); eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
He was a graduate of Clinton High School and Iowa State University, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering and was a scholarship swimmer. He was a member the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at ISU. He worked missile assignments for Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, primarily with the Bomarc and Minuteman Defense System. He crisscrossed the United States, living on the west coast and the east, as well as north and south, of the Mason-Dixon Line. In six years, Bob and Ellie lived in seven states with four small children before settling in Merritt Island, Florida, in 1965. It was there that he completed his MBA at Stetson University in 1970.
On the space coast, he turned from defense to aeronautical engineering with Chrysler and later United Technologies. He was a quality manager of engineering for the solid rocket boosters for the fledgling space shuttle program. He retired from USBI in 1993. He was instrumental in the founding and building of East Merritt Island Little League and was its first president. He was later a coach for many years, enriching the lives of hundreds of Merritt Island youths. He, along with his wife, was very active in the Merritt Island Moose Lodge and was a past lodge governor. He was a frequent benefactor to both Mooseheart and Moosehaven.
A Memorial service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church on Needle Blvd., in Merritt Island on Saturday, June 1st at 11:00am, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life at the Moose Lodge on Courtney Parkway.
