Dr. Rosa Kathleen Riggs, Ph.D., M.D., daughter of Reverends Charles and Helen Riggs was born February 20th, 1937 in Evansville, Indiana. She passed away peacefully with family by her side at UK Hospital on January 11, 2014 in Lexington, Kentucky. Kathleen was a wonderful, spiritual, nurturing, loving and understanding friend and mentor to hundreds of friends, family, and patients. At age twenty, she taught biology at Woodford County High School where she was elected by students as Favorite Teacher of the Year. She then earned her Ph.D. in biology and taught at Transylvania University. At age thirty-three, Kathleen entered medical school at the University of Kentucky where she specialized in psychiatry and served as Chief Resident. Her love of people made her the extraordinary psychiatrist that she was. Kathleen's goal in life was exemplified by the Sam Walter Foss poem, "The House by the Side of the Road," which she often recited: "Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." And that is how she lived her life. She lived by the side of the road and was a friend to man. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Angela Kummer, nephew Paul Kummer and Ben Cole. She is survived by her family, Joy Kokernot, Sarah Kokernot and husband Dr. Juan Martinez, Bobbie Cole, C.J. Cole, nieces and nephews Joanna Davis and husband Ricky, David Kummer, Jerry Kummer and wife Sarah, and her great-nieces and nephews Adrian Davis and Jennifer Seagraves, Logan and Torie Kummer, Mark, Christian and James Kummer and brother-in-law Norbert Kummer.
