Forrest Shepherd, 84, of Sanford, N.C., passed away in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C., on Sunday, July 13, 2014.
Forrest was born Sept. 20, 1929, in Midland, and entered military service in 1946. Forrest was a well decorated war veteran who served one tour in the U.S. Navy followed by 22 years in the Army's Parachute (Airborne) Divisions, to include the 82nd Airborne (three tours), 11th Airborne (one tour), 101st Airborne (one tour), 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team (one tour), and several other assignments. His overseas assignments include Korea (two tours), Vietnam (two tours) and Germany (two tours).
Services will be held at 9 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, in the chapel of Adcock Funeral Home, in Spring Lake, N.C., followed by burial in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at a visitation on Tuesday, July 15, from 6 to 8 p.m.
He is preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Anne Adkins, Tressie May, Gladys Freese, Vesta Martin and Mildred Bently, and brothers, Oscar, Monroe and Ward.
He is survived by his wife, Kyong Cha; daughter, Susan K. Cox, of Corpus Christi, Texas; son, Darrell B. Shepherd, of Sarasota, Fla.; sister, Opal Plummer, of Warsaw, Ind.; two grandchildren; and one great grandson.
