Newark - Gary M. McIlwain, 61, entered eternity on Wednesday (April 16, 2014) at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital after a courageous battle with ALS.
Family and friends may call Monday (April 21) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, Inc., 124 W. Miller St., Newark, where a funeral service will be Tuesday (April 22) at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in East Newark Cemetery.

Gary was born the son of Earl and Geraldine (Coffey) McIlwain on Sunday, January 11, 1953, in Endicott, N.Y. He attended and graduated from Clyde-Savannah High School in 1972 and then attended Auburn Community College. Gary served with the Clyde Police Dept. from 1976 to 1980. He then served as a Newark Police Officer retiring in 2006. Directly after retiring from the Newark Police Dept. he joined the Wayne County Sheriff's Dept. Gary also served as Arcadia Town Councilman for several years and also as Animal Cruelty Officer. He was a very soft spoken man with a love for his community, which for many years he served. Gary was a member of St. Michael Church in Newark, a founding member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, Chapter 17. He loved to ride his motorcycle, work around his home, inside and outside. He also liked working on and fixing the Wayne County Sheriff's Van.
Gary will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 38 years, Marlene (Barnes) McIlwain; daughters Crystal and her fiancé Peter Contario and Kayli and her fiancé Joshua Swart; granddaughter Mackenzie; mother Geraldine McIlwain; sister Kelly (Michael) Stewart; brothers Larry, Mike (Tami) and David McIlwain; many nieces and nephews and many special friends.
Gary was predeceased by his father Earl McIlwain.
