PENN YAN - Shirley J. Chisom, age 82, of Penn Yan, passed away on Tuesday (March 13th, 2012) at the home of her caregiver Tina Smith of Dundee.

Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life at the Penn Yan Moose Lodge on Saturday (March 17th); from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Shirley has donated her body to the University of Rochester Anatomical Gift Program.
Friends may contribute to the Yates County Humane Society or Ontario Yates Hospice in Shirley's memory.
Shirley was born in Rossie, St. Lawrence County, N.Y. to the daughter of the late Rollin and Elma Congdon. Shirley was one of the founding members of the Penn Yan Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps. She also belonged to the Penn Yan Moose Lodge, VFW and American Legion. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play sports. Shirley was a homemaker, and also drove bus for the Penn Yan School District. She also was an aide at Soldiers and Sailors Hospital and a home health aide and caregiver for many people in Penn Yan. She enjoyed being with her family and hanging out with all of her friends at the Walnut Hill Apartments. Shirley was married to William Chisom Sr. on March 30th, 1958 in Knoxville, Penn., and was married for 33 years until his sudden death in 1991.
Shirley is survived by Gary Race of Penn Yan, Merrill Race (Trish) of North Carolina, William Jr. (Susan) of Penn Yan, Stephen (Georgette) of North Carolina and Craig Chisom of Penn Yan, 16 Grandchildren, Marc, Zach, Jared, Jackie, Jenny, Christopher, Matthew, Aaron and Brandon Race; Rachael, Derek, Mariah, Kelsi, Kyle, Adam, and Cody Chisom, eleven Great-Grandchildren, and one sister, Nadine Mayo of Penn Yan, and two nieces, Patty Percy (Florida) and Donna Mayo of Penn Yan.
Shirley is predeceased by her husband William Sr. in 1991, her two sisters Bonnie and Alma and her brother Norman and nephew Robert Mittica.
