DUNDEE - James L. "Jim" Howell, 78, died unexpectedly Tuesday (March 30, 2010) at Schuyler Hospital, in Montour Falls.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday (April 3) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water St., Dundee. An American Legion service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours. A graveside memorial service with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday (April 24) at Tyrone Union Cemetery, Tyrone.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dundee Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, 14837.
James was born April 24, 1931, in the Town of Starkey, the son of the late Walter M. and Edith M. Knapp Howell. He graduated from Dundee Central School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army as a Tank Driver in Germany from 1951-1953. On Dec. 17, 1954, in Andover he married the former Mary Rosetta Davis. Working for Watkins Salt for a year after his time in the Army, Jim accepted a position as an Engineer with Columbia Gas Company. While in their employ he left Dundee in 1954 to live in Bolivar, and then Allentown, returning in 1968 to Rock Stream, and retired after 40 years in 1994.
Mr. Howell was a dedicated American Legion Member and was a former 7th & 8th District State Vice Commander; he was a Life Member of the Penn Yan American Legion Post #355, the Dundee V.F.W. Goodrich-Smith Post #8649, the Seneca Lake Duck Hunters, and the Allegany Firemans Assoc. He was also a member of the Penn Yan Loyal Order of The Moose Lodge #2030, and was a former Town Councilman of Allentown. When he was not volunteering, he enjoyed bowling, basketball, reading the newspaper, and mowing the lawn.
He is loved and will be missed by his wife of 55 years, Mary Rosetta "Rose" Howell at home; daughter, Catherine E. (Richard) Seeley of Lansing; three sons, Douglas J. Howell of Dundee, Jerald R. Howell of Lakemont and Andrew C. Howell of Dundee; a grandson, Richard F. Howell of Abilene, Texas, two granddaughters, Leigh M. and Taylor E. Howell of Dundee; a sister, Dorothy (Kenneth) Cooper of Fort Myers, Fla.; a brother, Lloyd (Jean) Howell of Dundee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Martha Howell and Laura Galek; and four brothers, Clarence, Charles, Alfred, and Howard Howell.
