Alton V. Race , Jr,

PENN YAN - Alton V. Race, Jr., 81, passed away Thursday (February 5, 2015) at home with his family by his bedside.
In keeping with Alton's wishes, no calling hours or funeral service will be held.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday (June 27, 2015) at the Seneca Lake Duck Hunters Club at 1:00 p.m.
Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Alton was the son of Alton and June Race, Sr. He attended Penn Yan School where he graduated in 1955. He then entered the U.S. Army and was a SP4 serving from 1954 to 1956 at which time he stayed in the reserves until 1962. He married Marilyn M. Sumner on January 8, 1958. He worked for Races Garage for 25 plus years, then built and operated JR's Garage opening in 1974. At his retirement in 1999 he built a cabin in the woods in Barrington, where he loved to go to hunt. Alton was a avid hunter, golfer and fisherman; he also enjoy dancing, playing cards and camping, getting together with friends and going to Out-A-Fit Hunting Club at Cranberry Lake. He joined the Dresden Fire Department in 1965 and was chief for 8 years, where he was a life member; he also belonged to the American Legion, The Moose Club and a life member of the Seneca Lake Duck Hunters Club.
Alton is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn; sons, Dennis (Merrill) Race, and Jeffrey (Pam) Race; daughters, Vickie (Raymond) Young, and Pam (Mike) Townsend; his guard dog, Max; six grandchildren, Michele Viele, David Race, Derek Race, Rick Young, Justin Race and Shawnee Young; six great-grandchildren, Sierra, Kaia, Austin, Madison, Logan and Cayden; eight fury grandchildren; sister, Audrey (Dale) Hartman, and Phyllis (Bill) McLoud; and a brother, George (Janet) Race; and several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
He was predeceased by his mother and father June and Alton Race, Sr.; mother and father-in law, Blanche and Adelbert Sumner; and sister-in-law, Barbara Chester.
