Bruce Douglas Cawthorne

Bruce Douglas Cawthorne passed away July 18, 2013, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born Jan. 9, 1949, in Chattanooga, Tenn. He graduated from Lakeview High School in Fort Oglethorpe in 1967, and attended the University of Chattanooga, where he majored in business.
Bruce served his country proudly in the Air Force from 1970-1977, where he was an aerial re-fueling specialist on an RC 135 servicing fighter jets and bombers during the Vietnam War.
In 1977 he joined the Moccasin Bend Golf Course staff as a PGA Golf Pro. From there he moved to St. Louis to join the golf pro staff at Westwood Country Club. He joined the Ben Hogan sales staff in 1983. He also owned Chattanooga golf shops in Chattanooga, Tenn. In 2004 he obtained his Florida real estate license and went to work for a large real estate developer in central Florida.
He was a member of Cumming First United Methodist Church and the Unity Sunday School class.
Bruce was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Earl Cawthorne Jr.; and his mother, Martha Shepard Cawthorne Rhea.
He is survived by his wife, Malinda McDaniel Cawthorne; daughter, Elizabeth Patty Cherry; son-in-law, James Gregory Cherry; twin granddaughters, Annabelle Kate and Emmaline Grace Cherry, all of Cumming; sisters, Lynne Cawthorne of Chickamauga; Cindy (Sam) Cawthorne Payne; niece, Ellyn Payne of Rossville.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, July 21, at 2 p.m. in the McDonald & Son Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Kathie Stasko officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Saturday, July 20, from 4-6 p.m. and Sunday, July 21, from 1-2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Bruce requested donations to the church's food pantry, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at PanCan.org, or to Embracing Hospice on Majors Road in Cumming.
