Captain Laura Hicks, age 48, of the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012. Born in Canton, Captain Hicks was a 1982 graduate of Forsyth County High School and began her law enforcement career in 1987 as a deputy with the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, being promoted to Sergeant three years later, and served in numerous capacities including the Detention Center, Field Operations, Fugitive Unit, GBI Metro Fugitive Squad, Investigations and Court Services.

Captain Hicks obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Art from The University of Georgia in 1997 and received a Master's Degree in Public Administration (Justice Administration) from Columbus State University in 2008. She was a 2005 graduate of both the 220th Session of the FBI National Academy and the 28th class of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College.
She is survived by her partner, Judy Tormey of Stone Mountain; mother and stepfather, Carolyn and Richard Garcia of Cumming; father and stepmother, Lynn and Paulette Hicks of Monroe; brother, David (Tracey) Hicks and niece, Reagan Hicks all of Ball Ground; numerous other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services celebrating the life of Captain Laura Hicks will be held Friday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. at Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, with Chaplain Elwood (Woody) Spackman, MDiv., officiating. Interment will follow at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens in Cumming.
