Benjamin Carleton Hanie, 68, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2009, in Cumming.
Ben was a retired captain for Northwest Airlines, beginning his career with Southern Airways in Atlanta, which merged to become Republic Airlines, then Northwest. A graduate of Decatur High School, Army veteran and seventh generation Georgian, Ben was a historian of the Civil War and the Native American. He loved metal detecting and was skilled in uncovering authentic artifacts. Ben was an active member of Cumming Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James T. Hanie and Louise M. Hanie; and brother, Robert E. Hanie.
Survivors include his wife, Gwyn Hanie of Cumming; daughters, Elizabeth Hanie of Charlotte, N.C., Patricia Hanie of Duluth; and brother, Charles A. Hanie of Townsend, Tenn.
