Betty Torrey Spencer, 85, of Atlanta passed away June 21, 2012, in Atlanta. Born Nov. 26, 1926, in Elberton, she also lived in Buckhead and Cumming and was a graduate of the University of Georgia.
A lifelong Presbyterian, she served for many decades in a variety of volunteer and leadership roles at her beloved Peachtree Presbyterian Church, including Life Member of Women of the Church and an elder in Peachtree Presbyterian Church. She was Chair of the Christian Community Action, and on the faculty of the Synod. She was Assistant Clerk of the Session and Chair of the World Mission, PATH and Christian Community Action Committees. She served on the Presbytery and Synod Coordinating Councils, and on the Organizing Board of Directors for the Atlanta Union Mission.
Her civic service included Northside Junior Women's Club, Young Matrons' Circle for Tullulah Falls School, the Big Sister Organization, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; and son, Mark.
She is survived by her son, John Jr. of Cumming; daughter, Leslie Spencer Pearl of Buckhead; brother, Ben Torrey; sister, Barbara Torrey Peddicord, both of Jasper; grandchildren, Kurt and Paulina Spencer of Raleigh, N.C., Anna Sydney Pearl of Atlanta; and daughter-in-law, Patty Spencer Merrell of Raleigh, N.C.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 14, at 10 a.m. in the Kellett Chapel of Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Rabun Gap Nacoochee School, 339 Nacoochee Drive, Rabun Gap, GA 30568 or at rabungap.org. SouthCare Cremation and Funeral Society in Marietta is in charge of arrangements.
