Billy Howell Barrett was born on Nov. 7, 1924, in Pell City, Ala., to Florence and Herman Barrett. He passed away on May 31, 2009, while waging a courageous battle against kidney disease. Bill was the second of five children. The family lived and worked on the farms of relatives during the Great Depression in the Marietta area while maintaining their Pell City home until they could finalize a more permanent move to Marietta. It was there where he finished school.
During World War II, he was part of the Army European Command, which served our country so well in its greatest time of need. A short time later, after discharge, he re-enlisted in the Air Force where he served in Puerto Rico. Upon finishing his military career, he returned to Cobb County where he and his brother Ernest developed a successful dry cleaning business. During this time he and Ernest became intimately involved regarding the politics of the county. They, along with Bill Bullard and several others, became known as the "Young Turks" due to their desire to take the county to a different and elevated community level. They succeeded beyond belief.
During this period, he married Dorothy Kelton. Their marriage lasted for 50 years before her untimely death 6 years ago. It was a union made in heaven. During their time together, they traveled throughout the country in their beloved motor coach. He was particularly fond of the 'Old West' and spent much time exploring areas related to it. They were very proud and excited to tell stories concerning the places that they had visited. Eventually, they settled in Forsyth County, where they lived out their last years.
Bill Barrett was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother, Ernest Barrett; and sister, Edna Jones.
He is survived by his brothers, Ted Barrett and Billy Watson; two daughters, Janice Belinfante, married to Lou, who live in Cumming, Barbara Eaton, married to Gerald, who live in Smyrna; grandchildren, Jenney, Michelle, Jay, Michelle, Erik, Joshua and Kathleen; and his much beloved nieces and nephews.
Bill Barrett was truly a personification of the much-heralded "Greatest Generation". His family misses him greatly.
