Mr. Charles H. "Chuck" Phillips, age 90, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at his home with his family at his side.
Chuck was born in Forsyth County on Nov. 4, 1919. He lived most of his life in Dahlonega. He served as postmaster at the Dahlonega post office, retiring after 25 years of service. He was the last remaining member of the first Lumpkin County High School graduating class of 1936.
Chuck attended North Georgia College for two years before being drafted into the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a pilot and flew cargo missions in the China-Burma-India Theater with the Flying Tigers where he obtained the rank of captain. He was recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with four Battle Stars and two Overseas Bars, and American Theater Ribbon.
He was a member of Blue Mountain Lodge #38 F&AM in Dahlonega, York Rite Chapter #64, Yaarab Temple Shrine Club, Atlanta, and was a former commander of American Legion Post 239 in Dahlonega.
He was the son of the late Joseph Henry Phillips and Madeline Jordan Phillips and was also preceded in death by his wives, Mamie Burns Phillips, Virginia Betsill Phillips; and his brother and sister-in-law, Wint and Kathryn Phillips.
Chuck is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Greg Pierce of Dahlonega; grandchildren, Holly Pierce, Katie Pierce; nephews, John and Scott Phillips, both of Dahlonega; and number of other relatives also survive.
A graveside funeral service for Mr. Phillips will be held Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m., at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Dahlonega with Col. (Ret.) Haines Hill officiating. The family will receive friends at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega on Monday, Jan. 25, from 5-8 p.m.
