David Vertenar Smith, 92, of Gainesville passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at home following an extended illness.
The son of Steve E. and Edna Turner Smith, he was born in Pickens County. He moved to Forsyth County in 1936. Mr. Smith served in the Army Air Force in the 431st Signal Battalion in the Mediterranean area during World War II. He worked for Smith Lumber Company and Gainesville Machine Shop before he began working at Lockheed where he retired as a machinist after 23 years of service. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, The Chestatee Masonic Lodge #102 and the Order of Eastern Star, Redwine Chapter #297.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Westbrook Smith; children, Gary and Charlotte Smith, Dan and Debbi Smith, Morris and Robin Smith, Margie and Jim Conner; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Higginbotham and Jean Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at New Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be at Little and Davenport Funeral Home on Friday, Sept. 18, from 6-8 p.m.
