Mr. Donald Jay Long, 87, of Hartwell passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at his home. Born Dec. 31, 1922, in Shelby, N.C., he was the son of the late John Odell Long and Mary Llese Hord Long. He was a retired machinist from Buford Dam & Powerhouse, Lake Lanier Project. He was a member of NARFE, AARP, Athens Rock & Gem, Savannah River Valley Geological Society, Georgia Antique Engine Club, Cumming First Baptist Church and the Hartwell American Legion Post 109. He was a U.S. Army veteran, where served in World War II and the Korean War.
Mr. Long was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Josephine Long Roberts; and a sister, Josephine Elaine Long.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Moody Long of the home; daughter, Donna Ruth Long of Hartwell; four grandchildren, Christina Stapler, Ann Cole, Lynn Floyd, Joe Roberts also survive.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 6, in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Dr. R. Allen Stewart officiating. Mr. Long wished to be cremated after his services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the , 1925 Century Blvd., Suite 10, Atlanta GA 30345.
