Obituary
The Guest Book is expired.

Elizabeth J. Garrett Simonds, 89, a resident of Cumming for the past nine years, went to be with her Lord on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014. Born in Little Rock, Ark., Elizabeth, better known as Betty, was the daughter of the late Roy Elmer Garrett and Rose Lillian Cooksey Garrett. Betty was a graduate of Washington University School of Nursing in St. Louis, Mo., and received a degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Betty then went on to work in the admissions office at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, and presented speeches at the high schools as a recruiting officer for the Barnes School of Nursing. After her marriage, she moved to Peru with her husband Warren, who was a coordinator in setting up a government hospital in Lima, Peru. Betty and Warren later moved to Baton Rouge, La., where she spent many years as a Red Cross nurse and volunteer, and was often called upon to oversee and set up disaster shelters in the southern states, and received many Volunteer of the Year awards. After raising three children, Betty was employed for the next 25 years for the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board working as a registered nurse in the local schools. She was so devoted to those young children that when she could not reach a parent regarding a child's health, she would make a house call. Betty also became an advocate for health education in the schools. In 1983, Betty was installed as the President of the Louisiana State School Nurses Association. Betty was also actively involved in the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America for many years. While residing in Baton Rouge, Betty was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church. After moving to Cumming after Hurricane Katrina, Betty became a member of First Redeemer Church. Also while in Cumming, she continued her volunteer work, volunteering at Northside Forsyth Hospital.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Warren W. Simonds; and her sister, Rosalee Conner.
Betty is survived by her three children, William P. Simonds, Carolyn S. Cagle (Kenny), Jonathan R. Simonds (Kathy); grandchildren, Patricia Lilley (Nick), Caitlin Cagle, Hunter Cagle, Tyler Simonds, Cooper Simonds, Joshua Simonds, Andrew Simonds, Daniel Jon Large, Kelli Jo Kutach, and Amber Simonds; great-grandchildren, Anslee Hendrix and James Hendrix; nephew, Garrett Conner (Carol); nieces, Rosemarie Ferch (Ron), Monika Simonds; great-niece, Anne Kachmarek (Joel); and great-great-nieces, Claire Kachmarek and Avery Kachmarek, all of whom she loved dearly.
The family would like to give special thanks to Kelly Christensen, mom's longterm caregiver, and Doorye Kim along with others from BrightStar and most recently, Alison Cunningham, mom's hospice nurse, and United Hospice for their wonderful loving care. Betty's body was donated to Emory University School of Medicine for medical education and research.
