George Robert Whelchel, age 78, of Cumming went to be with his Lord Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016. George was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany and faithfully attended Pleasant Hill Full Gospel Church of Dawsonville.
He is preceded in death by his son, Tim Whelchel; his parents, Lee and Nora Whelchel; grandson, Bradley Hughes; several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his best friend and companion of 58 years, Bonnie Barrett of Cumming; daughters, Rachel and Jerry Hughes, Angela and Benny Sawyer all of Cumming; grandchildren, Brannon Hughes, Brittany and Michael Middleton, Scott Whelchel, Christy and David Jones, Brent and Crystal Sawyer, Brian and Tara Sawyer, Tenicia and Brandon Cook; great-grandchildren, Brianna and Mikaela Hughes, Arissa Harper, Olivia Hughes, Bryson and Bradyn Whelchel, Christen and Sawyer Lee, Kyle and Logan Sawyer, Jackson, Trent and Chasity Sawyer; brothers, Charles Whelchel, Howard Whelchel both of Gainesville; sisters, Lois and Harlin Ridley of Dawsonville, Nora Mae Dodd of Gainesville; a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services were held Monday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Ingram Funeral Home with the Revs. Jimmy Payne and Austin Houston officiating. Interment followed at Sawnee View Gardens.
Ingram Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
