James Conrad (J.C.) Powell Jr., age 85, passed away Aug. 7, 2009. Born in Dallas, Texas, to James C. Powell Sr. and Eulah Dawson Powell, he spent most of his life in Texas and graduated from Lubbock High School. Following service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to Lubbock to complete his Bachelors and Masters degrees at Texas Tech University. J.C. worked in the banking industry for 21 years in both Texas and New Mexico. After retiring, he was employed by the FDIC.
J.C. was active in the Methodist church, Boy Scouts of America, and various community groups throughout his life. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, he will be missed by many.
Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his parents; and his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Helen Gillham Powell.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Jerry Misurek of Cumming, with whom he lived for the last seven years; son and daughter-in-law, James C. III and Terri Powell of Tomball, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Mona and Jim Sandlin of Odessa, Texas; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a niece, four nephews, and several cousins.
Burial will be in the Terry County Memorial Cemetery in Brownfield, Texas, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22. A memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the Bowman Chapel at the First United Methodist Church of Lubbock.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gift Processing at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation, 1687 Tullie Circle, Atlanta, GA, 30329.
Claire Brothers Funeral Home in Houston, Texas, is in charge of arrangements.
