Jo Ann Matthews Buice, 81, of Morganton, and formerly of Sugar Hill, passed into Heaven's gates Jan. 6, 2009. Jo Ann was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Nicholson, Jackson County, to Hugh Presley and Maurie Harris Matthews. At the age of seven, Jo Ann and her family relocated to Cumming. She was a 1944 graduate of Cumming High School where she was a star basketball player and where she also met the love of her life and future husband, Maron S. Buice. They continued to be sweethearts in marriage for more than 60 years. Jo Ann attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville and the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta. While a student at the Women's College, she participated in a college drama group. A devout Christian, Jo Ann loved and served her Lord Jesus through song and music. She was a member of the Sugar Hill Trio for many years and sang in many church choirs, including The Silvertone Choir. She and Maron also co-founded the now popular annual event, "Singing In The Mountains" held at Fannin County High School Performing Arts Center in Blue Ridge. Jo Ann was a former member of Sugar Hill Baptist Church, a member of Appalachian Baptist Church in Morganton, and a former member of the Cumming Baptist Church.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Maron S. Buice of Morganton; sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Carolyn Buice of Buford, Michael and Paula Buice of Suwanee, Hugh and Kay Buice of Suwanee; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Michael McBroom of Morganton; sister, Dr. Helen Matthews Lewis of Morganton; grandchildren, Chad and Leslie Buice of Sugar Hill, Amy and Ed Reese of Buford, Blake and Kristie Buice of Buford, Clint and Jaime Buice of Buford, Brett Humphrey of Yokosuka, Japan (U.S. Navy), Britni Humphrey of Suwanee, Mikey Humphrey of Morganton, Cory Buice of Atlanta, Dana Buice of Atlanta, Todd Buice of Suwanee; great-grandchildren, Joshua Buice of Sugar Hill, Jamie Reifert of Buford, Joey Reifert of Buford, Aaron Reese of Buford, Hunter Buice of Buford and Presley Buice of Buford; step great-grandson, Ben Reese of Buford; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Minnie Staton of Suwanee, Ann and Glad Sudderth of Sugar Hill, Truman Thompson of Buford; and several nieces and nephews.
Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Melford Buice, Mae Thompson, Adrian Staton, Marie and Jessie Hayes.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 3 p.m. at The Family Church a/k/a First Baptist Church of Sugar Hill with the Rev. Alton Towe and the Rev. Dan Bremer officiating. Interment will follow in Sugar Hill Cemetery in Sugar Hill.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Appalachian Baptist Church, P.O. Box 895, Morganton, GA 30560, in memory of Mrs. Jo Ann Buice.
