John Sherman "Buddy" Whedbee Sr., 74, of Cumming passed away May 19, 2010, at Embracing Hospice House. Born in Darlington, S.C., he was the son of the late William and Bessie Whedbee.
Mr. Whedbee retired from the U.S. Army as a Colonel after 26 years of distinguished service, including two tours of duty in Vietnam. Among his service awards are the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He received both his undergraduate and MBA degrees from the University of Alabama.
A man of many interests, Buddy enjoyed woodworking, bird watching, landscaping, camping, sailing and genealogy. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Nora Whedbee of Cumming; sister, Sue Goldsmith; daughters, Amy (Jim) Tankersley of Charleston, S.C., Lisa (Mark) Derenthal of Alpharetta; sons, John S. "Jack" (Yukari) Whedbee Jr. of Cumming, Bill (Crystal) Whedbee of Suwanee; grandchildren, Soon-Mi, Jacob, Yuki, Joshua and Young-Min Whedbee, Simon, Griffin and Julian Whedbee.
A funeral mass will be held Friday, May 21, at noon at Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
