Mr. Joseph Holder, age 90, of Cumming, formerly of Memphis, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009. Mr. Holder worked for Layne and Bowler for 45 years in Memphis, and was an Army veteran serving as a staff sergeant in World War II in the European and Philippines Theaters. His decorations included the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon and one Bronze Service Star. He was a loving father and wonderful grandfather who loved Jesus, hunting, fishing and cooking. He was a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame (baseball).
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ella Holder; four brothers; and four sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Holder of Cumming; children, Terry Holder of Ellendale, Tenn., Michelle and Richard Sissom of Cumming, Mike and Charlotte Boren of Ball Ground; grandchildren, Joey Holder of Franklin, Tenn., Wendye Hendley of Hoschton, Scott Boren of Hernando, Miss., Richie Sissom of Dacula, Andrea Pfisterer of Hernando, Miss., Chris Morgan of Ball Ground; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives also survive.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 11, at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Crematory in Memphis, Tenn., with the Rev. Richie Sissom officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Ingram Funeral Home and Crematory on Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 6-9 p.m. and at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Crematory on Friday, Sept. 11, from 12:30 p.m. until hour of service.
