Julian Ray Barksdale Jr., beloved husband of Jean Stringer Barksdale, passed away Sept. 3, 2009, in Northside Forsyth Hospital in Cumming at age 79.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian R. and Eunice J. Barksdale; and son, David Michael Barksdale.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jean; brothers, William Erwin Barksdale of Beaumont, Texas, Richard Fulton Barksdale of Huntsville, Ala.; children, Julian R. Barksdale III of Madison, Miss., Marty Barksdale Thomas of Cumming; grandchildren, Nathan Thomas, Ben Thomas, Caroline Thomas, Virginia Barksdale, Jacob Barksdale, Alan Barksdale; son-in-law, Christopher B. Thomas; daughters-in-law, Jane Barksdale and Carrie Barksdale.
Julian grew up in rural Rankin County, Miss., graduating from Pisgah High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1952, and soon after graduated with a B.S. in civil engineering from Mississippi State University in January 1955. He was employed as a bridge designer for the Mississippi State Highway Department from 1955 to 1967; a partner at Gaddis Engineering in Jackson, Miss., from 1967 to 1969; assistant bridge engineer for the Mississippi State Highway Department from 1969 until 1989; manager and vicepresident with Neal-Schaffer from 1989 until his retirement at the end of 2002.
In 2003, Julian and Jean relocated to Cumming to enjoy their retirement years. Since then, he had been an active part of First Baptist Church of Cumming. He was a quiet man, loved by many people, and touched many lives. He will be missed terribly by everyone who knew him.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 3 p.m. at Ingram Funeral Home Chapel followed by burial at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming.
