Laverne Roper Underwood, 82, went home to heaven Friday, April 17, 2009, following a lengthy illness.
She is survived by sons, Larry (Jeanette) Underwood of Ooltewah, Marty (Joyce) Underwood of Blountville, Tenn.; grandsons, Matt (Jennifer) Underwood of Harrison, Ethan (Tiffany) Underwood of Cumming; granddaughter, Lindsay Underwood of Blountville; six great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Elise, Caleb, Madelyn, Amelia, and Charlotte Underwood, with another great-granddaughter due in June. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie Roper and Coy Roper Smothers; brothers, Charlie and Bobby Roper, Don and Clyde Smothers; and her husband, Lewis Allen Underwood.
Laverne was born in Dawsonville, Oct. 25, 1926. As a young child, following the death of her father, her family moved to Henegar, Ala. She moved to Chattanooga during WWII where she met her husband, Lewis. They were married in January of 1945, and lived in the north Georgia area for 49 years. She remained in Ringgold for 10 years following Lewis's death in 1995 and moved to Hickory Valley Retirement Center in 2005.
Mrs. Underwood was a professing Christian and a member of First Baptist Church of Ringgold.
Funeral services were April 21 in Ft. Oglethorpe with Interment following in the Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park in Walker County.
