Ms. Janelle LaVerne Boggs, age 82, of Cumming passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at her home, following a long illness.
LaVerne grew up and lived in East Point and graduated from Russell High School in 1943. She worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for more than 40 years, retiring as regional credit supervisor. After Laverne moved to Cumming in 1976, she continued working Monday through Friday for Liberty Mutual, traveling back to East Point to care for her parents on the weekends.
She loved to work in her yard for hours. A favorite quotation of hers was "All through the long winter I dream of my garden. On the first warm day of spring I dig my fingers deep into the soft earth. I can feel its energy and my spirits soar." LaVerne tirelessly volunteered to help veterans and charitable organizations through the American Legion Auxiliary. She was president of Unit 51 of the 4th and 5th Districts and was president of the State of Georgia Association in 1978-79.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jerry Haywood of Hartwell; a son, Douglas E. Boggs of Cumming; a sister, Beverley Starr; a brother, William E. Badders, both of Albany; grandchildren, Alan Boyd, Mandy Porterfield, Carla Daniell; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Bolton Porterfield, Hunter and Grace Daniell; and a great-great-grandchild, Nevaeh Porterfield.
Graveside inurnment services will be held Thursday, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Atlanta with Chaplain Joe Burnett officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Crossroads Hospice, 1957 Lakeside Parkway, Suite 500, Tucker, GA 30084.
