Mr. Oscar Ray Jenkins, 87, of Hendersonville and formerly of Alpharetta, passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Spring Arbor West in Hendersonville, N.C. Mr. Jenkins was born March 20, 1922, in Gaston County, N.C., a son of the late Alfred Edward and Joyce Carpenter Jenkins. He and his wife were residents of the Atlanta area for many years before relocating to Hendersonville, N.C., to be near their sons and their families. He was retired from AT&T with 44 years of service to the company and was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force, serving during World War II.
A longtime member of the Lutheran faith, he was a charter member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Atlanta, and after moving to Hendersonville, he became a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John E., Frank K. and Joseph J. Jenkins; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eward and Susan Ratliff Brown.
Surviving are his wife, the former Sarah Elizabeth Brown, who was formerly of Peachland; sons and daughters-in-law, Oscar R. Jenkins Jr. and Elizabeth of Asheville, John M. Jenkins and Christina of Apex; grandchildren, Joshua, Stephen, Matthew, Samantha, Timothy Jenkins; brother and sister, Fred C. Jenkins of Charlotte, Ruth J. Nelson of Bradenton, Fla.
Services will be Saturday, Jan. 16, at noon by the graveside in Peachland Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Cauthen officiating. The family will greet friends Saturday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro.
